Bus Riders are Pushing Back Against Divestment in Low Income Communities

Derrick

Since launching our $50,000 end-of-year grassroots fundraiser, Workers’ Dignity members, allies, and other community supporters have responded generously. In two weeks, everyone has pitched in to raise $17,930. We need your help to keep momentum going!

A long time supporter has pledged to donate $1,000 if we can raise an additional $500 by midnight this Monday. Can you pitch in to support bus riders fighting for transit equity?

This week, MCRU member Derrick marched with dozens of community members at The People’s Alliance for Transit Housing and Employment’s (PATHE) Amazon: The Grinch that Stole Our Homes action demanding Nashville city government prioritize funding for affordable housing and a new transit expansion plan focused on the needs of transit dependent riders. Derrick shared his strong opposition to any decision to give $15 million to Amazon.

My friends and family are speechless and quite upset about the city giving away $15 million to Amazon. My mother’s friend who works for the city as a teacher was explaining to me how she and her colleagues will not receive any pay increase this year. I believe that Amazon coming here is going to have a catastrophic impact on the people who are already living here. Right now teachers are underpaid, there’s no affordable housing, cost of living is high, and homelessness is on the rise. They’re pushing us out of our city. I’m here along with everyone taking a stand. I truly believe if we can pull as many people together with common ground, we can get something major done.

Workers’ Dignity members are committed to continuing to organize for economic justice and dignity for all in Nashville. Your donations allow us to continue organizing and mobilizing our fellow low-wage workers against economic injustice. Can you support low wage workers and bus riders fighting for transit infrastructure in low income communities by making a donation today? Let’s raise $500 by Monday night!
