Support Amendment 1: We Need Community Oversight of Police Now!

On Thursday, October 25 at 8pm, Workers’ Dignity will host a Community Oversight Forum. We need community oversight of police now! In a few weeks, Nashvillians will vote on Amendment 1, which would create a Community Oversight Board to investigate police abuse.

Support Amendment 1: We need community oversight of police now!

Our communities face daily harassment, assault, and even death. In just the past two years, Jocques Clemmons and Daniel “DanDan” Hambrick were shot in the back and killed by two white police officers. Nearly every one of Workers’ Dignity’s members who are black have been pulled out of a car and searched at routine traffic stops. For many immigrant workers, a broken taillight can escalate from a traffic stop to detention and deportation. Driving while Black and Driving while Brown are daily realities.

Join us in a discussion presented by Community Oversight Now leaders on taking action to support Amendment 1 and win a Community Oversight Board. Thursday, October 25, 8:00pm at Workers’ Dignity southside, 335 Whitsett Rd (near Nolensville Pk). The event will be primarily in Spanish, with translation into English.

How Much Are Our Lives Worth? Join bus Riders on Oct. 27 To Honor 17 Nashvillians Killed Crossing The Street

How much are pedestrian lives worth? On October 27, Walk Bike Nashville and Music City Riders United are joining together to honor the lives of pedestrians killed and injured just trying to cross the road. Will you join us?

The action will include a press conference and walk along Clarksville Highway to highlight the dangers and to call on city and state government to dedicate funding to protected crosswalks in our most neglected neighborhoods. Walk Bike Nashville will also release their Impossible Crossings report.

Nashville is unsafe for pedestrians, bike riders, bus riders and anyone who’s not riding in a personal vehicle.  In the past few weeks, our community lost Dalachandra Washington, who was struck and killed after getting off the Shelby Avenue WeGo/MTA bus, and Dwight Daniels, who died in a hit-and-run two days ago in Hermitage. Being able to safely move around Nashville and surrounding areas should not be a life-threatening choice. Since 2017, 40 people have lost their lives while walking the streets, crossing the street, or riding bikes around Nashville. Many were simply crossing the road to get to or from a bus stop in predominantly low-income neighborhoods. It is time our city officials and TDOT include pedestrian safety in their plans for low-income communities.

Music City Riders United is calling for more well-lit bus shelters, protected crosswalks with activated flashing lights and safety barriers, and more sidewalks throughout Nashville. The crosswalk with flashing lights and raised medians installed last year on Nolensville Pike and Welshwood Drive has dramatically improved pedestrian safety, and only cost TDOT and Public Works $25,000 to build. Addressing hazardous conditions throughout the city must be a priority, and it should start in the neighborhoods that are most public transit-dependent – neighborhoods that are predominantly working-class and people of color.

Let’s show city and state leaders the life-and-death need for safety for pedestrians and bike riders — for true transit equity that includes the thousands of us who depend on public transit, walking, and bikes for travel.

  • Where: starting at Bordeaux Foods, 3205 Clarksville Pike
  • When: Saturday, Oct 27th, 2:00pm – 3:00pm
